Memories page 2

Back in the 60’s I used to attend gospel music concerts whenever they came to town, about 2-3 times a year.  One of my favorite groups was the LeFevres, mostly because of Mylon.  I loved the sound of his voice and just the incredible way he could sing a song.

I gradually lost touch with listening to gospel music and was never a fan of rock music, so I had lost touch with whatever Mylon was doing.  It wasn’t until I saw a Bill Gaither Gospel Classic show on public TV that I saw a segment with Mylon singing a song with his mother.  I was struck once again by his voice and went on Bill Gaither’s website to see if I could purchase a copy of that show.  I purchased a tape of his Reunion 1992 show and it has Mylon singing his song “Without Him” near the end of the tape.

I have never been so touched by a performance as I have by that one.  It brought me to tears, particularly when I learned what Mylon’s life had become in the rock world.  Knowing that he had “died” from a drug overdose and was able to turn his life completely around, I watched his singing that song with a new insight into Mylon’s soul.  I think when he wrote the song, he believed what he wrote, but when he sang that song on the Reunion show, he finally BELIEVED IN what he was singing.  He KNEW that he was dying, was enslaved, had a hopeless life, but that with Jesus he was saved.  If he never does another thing for mankind or for the gospel, he has done enough already in writing and singing his song “Without HIm”.

I have watched that tape over and over and play the CD of that recording over and over in my car.  I will never tire of it and it will always bring me to tears because I truly understand the message of that song.  I can’t (and no one should try to) live their life “Without Him”.  Thanks to Mylon for writing the perfect gospel song to drive that message home.  I hope he continues to let himself be used by God in the same way to show the way for others.  God bless him!

I enjoyed your web site and saw Mylon a number of times in concert at Creation music festival in Pennsylvania. I’ll also never forget the first time I saw his video of Trains Up In the Sky. Wow.

I’m 38 years old now, but as a teenager living in Atlanta about 2 miles from Mt Paran Church of God where every Monday Night Mylon would play in the Gym.  I never missed a show. The music was great and I believe at that age by hearing Mylon talk about his past in drugs and his love for Jesus, I honestly believe that’s why I never did drugs. I currently am a singer songwriter for a band called ADAMSDAY and live in New Orleans. Mylon is still a big part of my life. I even knew his daughter in High School. Thanks for this great web site. If I can dig up my old pictures I will scan a few.

By the way I even tried to audition to tour with Mylon when I was about 15. He told me he thought I was too young, but he let me play anyway.  I was definitely too young. But Mylon had such a nice way about him. He made me feel encouraged to continue on.

I have a deep love for Mylon, though he wouldn’t know me if he saw me. Turns out later in life my Uncle an Entertainment Attorney Joel Katz was Mylon’s Attorney.

This is a great web site and I’m so glad you have it.

I worked for Mylon for many years and was blessed to do his lighting work, mostly spotlights and also some backstage work.  I covered pretty much all of the shows in Georgia back in the 80’s (about 1982-86).  He played very heavily at Mt. Paran Church of God in Atlanta, GA in their auditorium.  He also went to church there as well, so not only did we get the opportunity to see Mylon and Broken Heart play VERY often, but also got to meet and talk and worship with him pretty much every week.  It was always an event when Mylon walked into the sanctuary, because you could hear all of the people whispering and buzzing when he came in.  His presence was pretty phenomenal.

But the main thing that amazed me the most about Mylon was that here was this very “cool cat” who would get on the stage show after show and rock out like crazy.  It was a literal pain to try and keep up with him with the spotlight chasing him from one side of the stage to the other.  I loved Mylon and he was a HUGE impact on me vocally, but it was a tremendous relief when they told me that I was to spotlight Kenny or Dean instead of Mylon.  The crowd would be screaming, jumping up and down, singing along, and air guitaring.  He would work them into a frenzy and then when no one saw it coming, he would break it down into sweet catchy songs like Children of the King, More, or The Warrior. Then he would speak in his heavy, comforting, slow, soft and gentle southern drawl and deliver the perfect testimonial message about how it was okay to love Jesus and be cool at the same time.  And before you knew it, hordes of people were giving their lives to Christ.  At first, they were rocking out and thrashing their fists in the air and before the hour was out, they were walking down the aisle in a decision that would change their lives forever. Some of them were even high or drunk when they got there, we saw a lot of that.  They only came to party and listen to some southern rock and roll, but before the concert was over, they had made a decision to change their lives forever.  Everyone knew that Mylon had a tremendous gift for speaking to “rock and rollers” and bringing them to Christ.  He was a well respected musician and song writer with the perfect balance of cool and Christ-like.

His music still brings me chills and all of his songs have melodies that continually tug at your heart strings.  Music that makes you want to be a better person and to strive to be more diligent at what we as Christians are here to do.  At the time, I had no idea about any of his past experiences or work beyond Broken Heart.  I just knew he was something special and that he had a commanding presence, but I never realized how that one man could have made such a difference in how I feel about “religion” and what it means to be a Christian.  It was an incredible time in my life and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.  And I’m sure that none of the thousands of people that gave their life to Christ as a result of his ministry would either.

Hi, great website!  I only heard Mylon & Broken Heart’s music for the first time a few months ago.  As a fan of 80’s and 90’s Christian music, I instantly liked what I heard when I first heard them.  I have Mylon’s solo album from 1992, but had no idea of his career beforehand.

Greetings,

I just ran across your site after seeing a post on Usenet. I can’t believe Live Forever is available on CD! Finally! I remember in college, my roommate was the lead singer of a band at Anderson College in Indiana. I was exposed to that album because they did the song It’s Alright. One day they played it in a convocation, and at the appropriate moment, a girl yells out from the audience: SING IT BROTHER!

The band almost lost it!

My fondest memory of Mylon was during the Sheep in Wolves Clothing tour (also at Anderson). I had been in the process of back sliding when they announced tickets on sale for that show, and I just HAD to see Mylon, so I bought two tickets. Well, I had sunk pretty low by the time the concert rolled around, I had almost forgotten about it in fact, when the day of the show I came across the tickets(can you say Holy Spirit?). I had nobody to take, so I asked a female friend of mine to go with me(a stripper friend of mine actually). Well, to make a long story short, the altar call comes, and I am under some HEAVY conviction, so I get up and go to the back of the auditorium where we were asked to go in answer to the call. I turn around, and there is my friend following me, crying her eyes out. I closed my eyes, and prayed: “God, I cant do this! I am trying to get right with you, how can I lead her to you??”. When I opened my eyes, there stood Mylon. He just turned to me and said “Son, God told me you could use a hand here” and he took over and led my friend to the Lord, while I was getting right with God myself.

Thanks for the great site, it brought back lots of memories!

In Him,
James

Great web site!  God bless you!  I have often wondered what happened to Mylon?  Now I know!  Thank you.  I am glad he is doing well.  The last time I saw him was in Wilmar, Minnesota, in the dead of winter,. on the Big World tour.  I did hear, however that he suffered a heart attack.  The last I heard of him, was his 92 release.

I got born again at a Mylon Lefevre and Broken Hearts Concert in Findlay Ohio back in 1985…I then volunteered and helped them set up for a concert in Mansfield, Ohio later that year I think I went off to college and hooked up with a guitar player and we played More for a college concert at Ohio State Univ. His music not only changed my life, it drew me into a deeper relationship with the Lord.. I do wish though that he and broken heart would do one reunion tour.. The music isn’t the same anymore.. Or maybe I am just older, but it seemed that the heart of the Lord was with the group.. The spirit of the Lord moved through them in a mighty way…Oh yes today I am a minister for the Lord, still on fire for Christ.

Just found your website today!!! I am a HUGE huge fan of Mylon! Never met him or have seen him in concert but own almost every “tape” (that’s how old they are) he’s made. Friends of mine introduced me to his music in the 90’s. They had a Christian rock group named Contender. I connect with Mylon’s music more than any other!! Good to know i am not his only fan out there…still.

I saw Mylon & Broken Heart down in Florida when I was sixteen. I was a troubled youth with no direction in life. I was blown away at their concert. Not only by the music and incredible stage show, but also by the powerful preaching Mylon did.

I think at that point in my life I could not relate to the three piece suit evangelic guys with the piled up hair dues. Mylon had about 2 feet of hair, an earring and wild clothes, and yet God was using him to reach long haired rocker guys like myself and many others too.

What has always stood out most to me about Mylon is his heart for the Lord. It seemed very genuine back then and is still true today.

I wrote a letter to Mylon’s ministry web site a couple years back about a struggle I was having, and that it was causing me to stumble. Well two days later I get a phone call and it’s Mylon LeFevre on the phone! He shared a lot of information that helped me through that struggle and I will always be grateful for that. Then he asked me to put my wife on with the speaker phone so that he could pray with both of us.

Mylon said he gets like a million hits a year on his web site and yet set aside time to call a complete stranger who was struggling. That says a lot about the man, and his heart for Gods children.

Thanks for letting me share some of my story, and thanks for this great site. I have added it to my favorites and will let my friends at church know about it also!

Blessings,
Jim

Hello brothers and sisters.  WOW! I am so happy to know that Mylon and family are still pressing on!

I am from Frederick, Maryland and am now 34 years old.  I’ve seen Mylon and Broken Heart at least 30 times when I was a young child all the way through my teen years.  I also had the chance to see them at Camp Creation once.  I have alot of really good memories of my time with Broken Heart but I have to say there is one memory that stands out the most.

When I attended the show at Creation, I was probably about 11 years old and my younger sister was 8.  After Broken Heart performed, my sister and I, along with about 40 other kids went around the stage to get another glimps of Mylon and the band.  When Mylon came off the stage, he met up with all of us.  There was a road leading through the campground that lead to the hotel that the artists stayed in during the festival.  That is where he was heading.  So we ALL walked with him down this road.  There was a trail of at least 40 people following close behind us.  The best part of it was that of all the people that were walking with him, my sister got to hold one of his hands while I held the other.  She and I walked hand in hand with Mylon all the way up the road.

It is one of my most precious childhood memories and I will forever keep it dear to my heart.

Thank You for loving me Mylon.

Your little sister in Christ,
Jodie Eichelberger

PS. Your website tribute is truly an inspiration. Thank you too and God Bless.

In the late mid and late 80’s i came across Mylon and broken heart in the form of a record (yes the round vinyl type) at my cousins house.  i listened to it, it was big world!!!  i fell in love with Mylon after that and during a very trying time for me i survived by listening to Mylon, Petra, and Carmen.  I haven’t listened to Mylon in years but came across a cassette tape of big world the other day and found that as i played it i still knew all the words.  I went to a Mylon and Broken Heart concert in Bristol, VA in the late 80’s or early 90’s during the Crank It Up Tour.  it was the best.  I still love the music and the message is as true and important today as it was for me then.  i survived that period with God;s help and I know he used Mylon and others to minister to me. Today I’m a police officer with a great family.

Thank you Mylon!!

There was some sort of advertisement that you could apply to go on this trip with Mylon as a missionary through some organization. For some reason I believe they were out of Minnesota. I’m sure Mylon could tell you.  I believe it was 1990.

Right now, all I remember is the general excitement of Mylon playing a huge place in Manilla, like their version of Madison Square Garden and all the people that came up to accept Christ afterwards. It was like the rock version of a Billy Graham crusade.

I remember how easily the people accepted Christ wherever we went and how amazing that was compared to the US.

And, of course I remember the mosquitos, the rice fields, the weird food, the kindness of the people and going to see a whole community that lived on a huge garbage dump.

I don’t remember a whole lot of details, but if I can locate those pictures, it will jog my memory.

You have a good night now.

I grew up listening to Southern Gospel music & had heard of the LeFevre’s all my life, but I had never heard of Mylon until years ago on PTL with Jim & Tammy Bakker.  He sang “Brand New Start” & I was blown away.  Back then he was very slim (too slim, Mylon!), had that jet black long hair, was dressed in black, & was still that handsome Christian man with the velvet voice.  Needless to say, I’ve been a fan ever since.  He & Christi have a blessed ministry & his music is as good as ever.  The last time I saw him on tv was on Carmen’s show on TBN.  It’s just icing on the cake that he is still moving forward in his work for the Lord.

I actually got to talk to Mylon twice, after the last two concerts with Broken Heart in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1990 and 1991. The first time I met him, one of the first things he asked me was if I was growing spiritually. I thought that was totally awesome that he was so down to earth and keeping the focus on God and not on himself. The second time I met him was in December 1991, the last concert Broken Heart played at Samford University in Birmingham on the Crank It Up tour before they broke up. I asked if he’d be willing to answer a few questions for an article for our campus newspaper, and very reluctantly he agreed. My questions had to do with the tour, and about some of the songs on CRANK IT UP. Mylon more or less cut things short when he said, “Listen, I might seem like a rock star out on that stage but I’m just a servant doing what my Master told me to do. I’m nobody special. Without Him, none of this matters at all.” I’ve thought about that a lot over the years, and the more I think about it, the more respect I have for Mylon. Incidentally, the interview never got printed in the campus paper, but Mylon’s words from that day have stuck with me a lot longer than any newspaper article would.

My first ever Christian rock concert was the taping of the Sheep In Wolves Clothing video at Heritage USA. I was against Christian rock until I attended this concert and bought the tape. I was changed from that day forward. I loved Mylon’s energy, encouragement, and heart-felt call to salvation delivered at every concert.

We do a Security for the Sonshine Music Festival in Willmar, MN and had seen Mylon perform there a lot. I made the mistake of asking him for an autograph backstage, not knowing his no signing policy. He Said “I’m not a performer, Man, I’m a Minister”. After being embarrassed, I thought that was an awesome statement.

I was a sheltered preacher’s kid and thought you could never be that cool and actually be a Christian. Mylon taught me that I could be myself, long hair and all, and still love Jesus. Don’t get me wrong I was not a rebellious kid I just thought that you had to look a certain way and have a 25pd bible to be a Christian. Then when I would go to Mylon’s concerts I could just feel the love of a Living God. That is what being a Christian is all about. I wanted to know Jesus. So I asked Him into my heart at Mylon’s concert in Ft. Myers, Fl in 1988. Thank you Mylon for all the times I know you were tired and felt like stopping. You kept going and because of your sacrifice I found the Lord and my life has never been the same. Thanks,

Of all of the Mylon and Broken Heart songs recorded…I feel the presence of the Lord every time I here More. Still, after all these years it ushers in the Glory of our God.

I was 12 years old and Mylon was my favorite singer. We went to the concert and it started snowing really bad so we had to get a hotel room in Rio Grande. We ended up staying in the same hotel as they were in,and my dad ran into Mylon at the pop machine. I have been A diabetic since I was 3 and my dad told Mylon and told him how much I loved their music. Mylon came back to the hotel room with my dad and prayed for me for the diabetes. He is A very special person and I will never forget meeting him. After that we all got back stage passes and autographs from the band. They were all special people .

When I saw Mylon the first time in 1984 it really impacted my life. I went through some of the same struggles with drugs, etc. that he did and I felt a bond with him although I never have talked with him. He shared that night about the things that he did and has been through and I said to myself that God was really going to use this man for the Kingdom and he has. Thanks for doing this website.

Well, not so much a story or memory, as each time I saw him and Broken Heart was SUCH a great memory, but I’m just thrilled that Mylon is actually a close friend of my family now. He and my father, who is a Pastor, are very close friends and it is a dream come true to be able talk with him freely and get to know him as he was my BIGGEST hero growing up. He is why I’m a Christian musician and songwriter. He and Christi (as I’m sure you know) are truly wonderful people.

The last time I saw Mylon & Broken Heart was at Six Flags In Texas just before they ended the group. It was the first time I heard the song “Secret Place” and it was like everything all around the park stopped and it was totally focused on worshipping God. It will be something I’ll will remember for the rest of my life!
